Yemen Cease-Fire Over Before it Begins

Yemeni officials have accused rebels of trying to assassinate high-ranking officials on the same day the a cease-fire agreement was to go into effect. According to officials, Deputy Interior Minister General Mohammed Bin Abdullah al-Qawsi’s car came under intensive fire in an attempt “to assassinate him.” Houthi rebels were accused of carrying out the attack. The rebel group has not responded to the charges.

Some suspect that the cease-fire will stay in place regardless of the recent skirmishes. According to one government official, “such violence is common in the early stages of peace deals.” It is possible that not all militia fighters have been informed that the truce went into effect or these could be considered tribal revenge killings.
