US to Appeal Blackwater Dismissal

Vice President Joe Biden has announced that the Justice Department will be appealing a recent lower court decision to dismiss charges against Blackwater guards.  Six Blackwater guards were facing manslaughter charges for the 2007 shooting of civilians in Baghdad, in which the guards maintain they were under attack.  Seventeen civilians were killed in the shooting, including.  Sparking outrage by Iraqi citizens, the Judge dismissed the case against the guards in 2009, citing mishandled evidence and violations of the guards’ constitutional rights.

The decision to appeal the dismissal has been criticized as purely political by the guards’ attorneys,  who continue to maintain their clients’ innocence.
