Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano indicated Saturday that the administration would grant Temporary Protected Status to Haitians already in the United States illegally. TPS is typically granted in cases where conditions in a country temporarily prevents the country’s nationals from returning safely, or in certain circumstances, where the country is unable to handle the return of its nationals adequately, such as the presence of ongoing war or the consequences of a natural disaster. She also warned that any refugees fleeing after Tuesday’s earthquake would be turned back.
