U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is in India this week to conduct regional security talks, with a focus on fighting insurgency in Afghanistan and relations between Pakistan and India. Gates’ two day visit, which marks the first high-level talks with India since the State Dinner last November, includes meetings with India’s prime minister, foreign minister and defense minister. Prior to his trip, Gates wrote an opinion piece for The Times of India in which he called for a greater cooperation between the United States and India, drawing upon the shared values of the two countries. Additionally, with India being the 10th largest defense spender in the world, Gates is also seeking to make “significant strides in developing a stable defense trade.”
