Turkish authorities have arrested 18 more active and retired military officials over an alleged plot to overthrow the pro-Islamic Turkish government in 2003. The plot, Sledgehammer, was part of a larger plan, Ergenekon, aimed at destabilizing the country and inciting violence by targeting civilians and Islamic mosques, thereby allowing the military to overthrow the government.
Turkish authorities have placed over 200 people—including journalists and other intellectuals—in detention due to their alleged involvement in Ergenekon. The Turkish military adamantly deny any such plot. The Turkish military has traditionally supported a more secular Turkey raising tension between the political and military arms of the ruling government.
