Taliban Attack Afghan Capital

Kabul was rocked by a coordinated Taliban offensive on Monday. So far 12 people have been killed, including 7 Taliban fighters, and 71 have been injured.  The attack, which lasted for 4 hours, was widely believed to have been carried out by a Taliban-allied group led by Sirajuddin Haqqani. Taliban forces, while widely unpopular in Kabul, have increased their attacks in the capital in an apparent bid to embarrass the government of Hamid Karzai. Despite the increased frequency of attacks, Afghan forces appeared more capable of dispatching the Taliban fighters. For his part President Karzai, went on Afghan television to claim that the Taliban was attempting to “cause fear” in the Afghan population.
