President Karzai Asks Tribal Leaders for Support

As U.S. and NATO troops plan a massive operation in Kandahar, President Karzai met with approximately 1,000 tribal leaders to garner support for the upcoming military operation. While promising that no operation would take place without the approval and support of the tribal leaders, Karzai also said that it was necessary for them to stop protecting their own tribes at the expense of Afghanistan as a whole. Due to their fear of the Taliban, the tribal leaders were hesitant to speak freely during the meeting. The people do not feel safe, even with the Afghan security forces, and they prefer to negotiate with the Taliban rather than oppose them.

The Taliban are believed to be preparing their own operation against U.S. and NATO troops. Karzai plans to have more such gatherings in the area to speak to the people about their concerns.
