The Patriot Act bans“material support” to groups the government designates as “terrorists,” the effect of which is a drastic increase in the government’s ability to prosecute terrorist activities. A collection of six different groups, along with two individuals, have petitioned the court to narrow this ban and the High Court has agreed to review the law. All briefing on the case is to be complete by February 12, 2010 and the case will be argued in either February or March. SCOTUSBlog provides a helpful brief of the legal issues and PDFs of the parties’ briefs.
