North Korea threatened to take what it termed “merciless military measures” after its warships clashed with the South Korean navy along a disputed maritime border. The North issued warnings and statements that the South would “pay dearly” after a skirmish left a North Korean ship severely damaged. A South Korean patrol boat was lightly damaged.
The incident stems from a dispute as to which side is entitled to control a certain stretch of waterways; the area in which the exchange took place has been under the South’s control ever since the United Nations drew a demarcation line following the Korean War. The North, however, has claimed that the true border line is far below that established by the U.N. and intends to stand firm on its position.
