Nicaraguan Court Determines Leftist President Ortega Can Seek Re-election

A ban on consecutive re-election has been overturned by the constitutional commission of the Nicaraguan Supreme Court. Many call it illegal and are opposed to it because only members of Ortega’s Sandista party were responsible for the ruling. The president of the commission as well as other opposition judges of the Liberal Party refuse to recognize the decision since they were not present for the vote.

Because Ortega was unable to convince Congress to amend the Nicaraguan constitution, opponents claim he therefore approached the courts.
