North Korea continues to fire artillery shells into disputed waters near the South Korean border and has detained a undisclosed second American for crossing its borders. Although N. Korea often conducts military exercises and toes the line with regard to the disputed maritime border, these artillery shells landed a mile from an undisputed border. Although the two militaries have poked and prodded each other with increasingly hostile action over the past few months, economic and humanitarian talks are proceeding forward between the two. State Department spokesman P. J. Crowley acknowledges North Korea’s actions are “provocative” and “not helpful.” The United States is working through the Swedes to obtain access to the first detained American.
