Munich Security Conference Opens, With China Making Debut

Today was the opening day of the annual Munich Security Conference. The conference opened with an address by China’s Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. This is the first year China has participated at the three-day conference, indicating their growing influence and role in the world. With Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki in attendance, Iran’s nuclear enrichment program will be on the agenda in hopes that Iran may agree to a Western proposal to send their uranium abroad for enrichment. Other issues on the agenda include Afghanistan and Pakistan’s security concerns as well as China’s future role in international security.
