Mossad Behind Assassination of Hamas Official, Says Dubai Police Chief

Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai’s police chief, said Thursday that there is a “99 percent” chance that the Mossad was behind the assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a Hamas leader, in Dubai  last month. The Mossad is Israel’s spy and intelligence agency.

Al-Mabhouh was a founding member of Hamas’s military group and was believe to have participated in the kidnapping and killing of two Israeli soldiers in the late 1980s. He had been living in Damascus, Syria, helping get money and weapons to Gaza.

Tamim’s comment comes after the police investigation led him to conclude that al-Mabhouh’s death could only be the work of a “professional criminal gang.”

No new evidence was revealed beyond the security camera video footage of the hotel and the eleven suspects with forged European passports. Six of the eleven names match those of Israeli citizens who were born in Britain. Although Israeli officials have not expressed concern about legal risks faced by six citizens, they are worried they could be arrested if they travel, and fear retaliation from Hamas.

The allegedly forged passports have caused the European countries they were falsified from to ask Israel for more information. They are concerned about the integrity of their identity systems.
