Japan Pledges $5 Billion in Aid for Afghanistan

Japan announced a pledge of at least $1 billion per year over the next five years just ahead of a visit by president Obama. Defense secretary Gates had asked Japan for more financial support for the war in Afghanistan during his visit to Japan last month. During that trip, Gates signed off on a Japanese decision to end refueling operations in the Indian Ocean in support of US “anti-terrorism” operation. The new government in Japan has not been as supportive of the US as the LDPR was, and might ask the US to move its Marine air base in southern Okinawa.
