Iraqi Court Sentences 11 Bombers to Death for Role in August Attacks

A court in Baghdad sentenced 11 Iraqis to death for their involvement in last August’s truck bombings at various government sites. The attacks, which occurred at the ministries of foreign affairs and finance,  left over 100 dead and over 600 injured. Hundreds more civilians and government officials died in additional bombings in October and December. Among the men convicted were several Al Qaeda members and an individual who testified that he had received financial support from a former Ba’ath leader currently residing in Syria. Last year witnessed a steep drop in insurgent activity in Iraq, but officials have suggested that violence will spike in light of the impending parliamentary election to take place in March.
