Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki blamed al-Qaeda for the blasts that killed at least 40 people and injured another 140. The two explosions in the city of Karbala occurred on Friday morning during a Shia holy day. The aftermath of the explosions produced conflicting reports. Two health ministry officials claimed that both explosions were attributed to suicide car bombs, while the Iraqi police say “two mortar rounds struck the area, driving pilgrims into the path of the suicide car bomber.” Unfortunately, these bombings took place despite heightened security.
