Iranian Reform Canidate Attacked Friday

Mehdi Karroubi, a reform candidate in last years Iranian elections, was attacked while visiting the northern town of Qazvin, to attend the mourning ceremony for opposition protesters.

According to a Sahamnews.org report, approximately 500 basiji—pro–government militia—and people from a nearby village attacked Mr. Karroub, forcing him to remain inside a building for four hours. After riot police were able to escort Mr. Karroubi to his armored car, it was shot at while driving away.

Rajanews.com, a pro–government news site, said several thousand people surrounded the house where Mr. Karroubi was and pelted it with stones, eggs and tomatoes, but did not mention gunfire or basiji militia.
