Iran announced that it plans to hold a nuclear disarmament conference beginning April 17. The conference is meant to demonstrate Iran’s commitment to not developing nuclear weapons. Saeed Jalili, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, announced the conference, entitled “Nuclear Energy for All, Nuclear Weapons for No One,” stating that “Iran, as a country supporting global disarmament invites the world to disarm and prevent proliferation.”
It is not yet officially clear which countries will participate in the meeting, although Jalili did mention that China would be among the participants. China’s support of Iran’s nuclear program has been a sore point for US-China relations. Chinese President Hu Jintao is set to attend Washington’s nuclear disarmament conference only a few days prior to Iran’s. Chinese officials rebuke Jalili’s claim, stating that no decision has been made whether to attend Iran’s conference.
