Iran Rejects IAEA Resolution

Late last week, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) passed a resolution that censured Iran for the construction of its second nuclear enrichment plant near Qom. The resolution, which garnered Chinese and Russian support, required that the Iranian government discontinue further construction.

Earlier this week, the Iranian government responded stating that it would construct as many as 10 new sites for enriching uranium. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad rejected the resolution, calling it “illegal” in a recent speech in Isfahan.

Full text of the resolution, which aims to assert the NPT’s safeguard provisions, can be found here.
