In an interview with Novaya Gazeta, Mikhail Gorbachev said that the pro-Kremlin United Russia party discredited itself and the people’s trust in political institutions through fraud in last week’s elections. Gorbachev, who has been supportive of the current party of power, issued this critique shortly after there was a Duma walkout by the Communist Party, the LDPR and the A Just Russia party last week. However, as Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported earlier this week, the walkout might have been prompted more by inter-party rivalry more than concern for free and fair elections.
