Iran’s foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, met with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Yukiya Amano to discuss a potential compromise on a nuclear deal. The Iranian foreign minister declared a deal is near. Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, dismissed the recent overtures and is waiting for action on the part of the Iranian government. “Based on the information that I have, I don’t have the sense we are close to an agreement,” Gates stated. German’s foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, echoed similar sentiments after his meeting with the Iranian foreign minister stating that it has “not made me change my mind” about Iran’s intentions.
The White House is moving to enact a new round of sanctions against Iran if a compromise cannot be met. China remains a major obstacle to enacting further sanctions.
