First Lady Michelle Obama has launched her first public campaign to combat obesity: “Let’s Move.” Through a combination of nutrition and exercise programs, and improvements in school lunches, playgrounds and medical checkups, the First Lady hopes to turn the tide on childhood obesity that is afflicting one out of every three American children and health care costs related to obesity cost over $147 billion per year. In conjunction with the rollout of this campaign, the White House has also convened a task force on childhood obesity to “develop a coordinated Federal response while also identifying nongovernmental actions that can be taken to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.” As today’s #1 disqualifier for military service, the President and military leaders view child obesity as a national security threat.
