Although both Pakistan and Afghanistan have stepped up efforts to neutralize and capture Taliban insurgents, prosecuting captured terrorists continues to be an uphill battle. A Pakistani court last week announced that it has not yet decided on whether to allow the extradition of several Afghan Taliban leaders. The detainees were recently caught during a Pakistani raid of suspected insurgents. Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Friday that he will be sending a formal request imploring Pakistan to extradite the men to Afghanistan.
The extradition issue will be revisited when the court resumes its hearing on March 15. The court will decide on a human rights activist’s assertion that the detainees should be tried under Pakistani law, as they were arrested in Pakistan.
