DOD To Extend Tanker Bid Deadline to Accommodate EADS?
The Department of Defense announced yesterday that it would possibly extend the deadline for bidding on the $40B KC-X Tanker program, in an effort to urge French aerospace giant EADS to submit a bid for the contract. Should EADS officially notify the Department of its intent to bid, the deadline will be be pushed back 90 days to July 9, 2010. Department officials hope that the addition of an EADS bid will encourage competition in the bid process, as Boeing is currently the only company officially bidding for the lucrative contract. This is the latest chapter for the embattled KC-X program, viewed by many as the Air Force’s top acquisition priority and perhaps one of the most important overall defense programs.
