Tensions between Columbia and Venezuela reached a peak today when President Hugo Chávez warned the Venezuelan people to prepare for war and ordered troops to the border between the two countries. President Chávez’s remarks come after the signing of a bases agreement between the United States and Columbia last month as well as the death of two Venezuelan soldiers by Colombian paramilitaries last week. President Chávez believes the bases agreement is intended to serve US military interests in the region rather than serve as a base to combat the widespread drug-trafficking problem in Columbia.
