In a time when the U.S. military is being tasked with increasingly diverse multi-mission operations, the Coast Guard will have its budget cut. To accommodate necessary fleet modernization and the budget cut, the Coast Guard will be reducing its force-size and operations. The limits of its aging fleet were demonstrated in recent operations in Haiti, where 10 of the 12 cutters sent to respond to the earthquake experienced significant equipment casualties and three had to return to port with propeller or shaft problems. While the unique abilities of this military force are increasing in demand, the Coast Guard will likely continue to do more with less.
