Belarus sent diplomats to Georgia this week to discuss a possible Belorussian recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. So far, only Russia, Nicaragua and Venezuela have recognized the two republics as independent states, and Georgian officials would like to keep it that way. Russia recognition came after Georgian forces attacking South Ossetia were defeated by Russian forces in the summer of 2008.
