Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd declared that Australian will be a present force in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. The Prime Minister visited Afghanistan on his way to India and stated that Australian troops will remain in the country “for the long haul.” This comes at a time when U.S. chief of NATO operations in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, calls for a raise in troop levels. Australian troops only number 1,500 and the Prime Minister has not hinted at any troop increase.
