Africa Turns Away U.S. Troops

In 2007 AfriCom, the US central command in Africa, was created in response to fears that Africa is a breeding ground for terrorists. Two years later, however, AfriCom’s top military officials are still stationed in Stuttgart, Germany and are not optimistic about finding a permanent home in Africa. Specifically, African leaders have been cautious in entertaining ideas for a permanent U.S. base in Africa because they fear the base will be seen as ushering “a new era of colonialism.”
