Abdulmutallab, Federal Agents, Resume Discussion

Christmas Day would-be bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has been persuaded by family members to open up to federal officials. He had initially done so on Christmas Day for an hour before he was Mirandized. From then until now, he had been uncooperative. His family members flew to see him in Detroit, where they convinced him to resume disclosing information to Federal investigators. Abdulmutallab’s handling has been the subject of heated debate in Congress, with Republican Kit Bond arguing that he should be sent to Guantanamo Bay and declared an enemy combatant. Democrats and Obama Administartion officals, however, had pointed out that shoe bomber Richard Reid was also tried under a federal court system. Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair was initally unaware of the events surrounding Abdulmutallab’s arrest, but has since referred to Federal actions has striking “a very understandable balance.”
